The word "baptism" means a washing or cleansing with water. In the natural world, water is often associated with cleansing. Christian Baptism is a a spiritual washing or cleansing using ordinary water and the Word of God. It is a special, sacred cleansing that God has provided for His Church. "...Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless" (Ephesians 5:26-27). According to the Book of Romans we are baptized into the death and resurrection of Christ.

Christian Baptism is meant for "all nations." God does not discriminate in any way, race, gender, or age. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." We baptize people of all ages as was the practice in the early church and in the Scripture when entire households were baptized.
Christian Baptism is directly associated with salvation and spiritual rebirth in Christ. Titus 3:5 says "He (God) saved us not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." Some define Baptism as a human work. This is not possible since we are saved by grace not by our works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is God's work or washing upon us. We are the recipients of God's mercy, grace and cleansing in Christ.
Christian Baptism is important. Jesus said, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:15-16).
